Canon Info

Canon Name: Sayaka Miki
Canon Age: 14

Canon: Puella Magi Madoka Magaica

Character Summary: Sayaka Miki is Madoka Magica's obligatory Urobuchi Idealist Punching Bag. An earnest girl with a firm sense of right and wrong, Sayaka is the protagonist Madoka's best friend, who is approached by Kyubey at the same time to become a Magical Girl. She doesn't accept the offer at first, though even as an ordinary girl she's shown to be brash and aggressive when it comes to defending others. Sayaka would like nothing better than to be a selfless hero of justice, rescuing everyone in a larger-than-life, gallant way.

Unfortunately, she's only human, and cannot forgive herself for that fact. Sayaka makes her wish in order to heal her childhood friend/badly-hidden crush Kyousuke, a talented violinist whose hand was injured. At first she's thrilled by the power she's gained and the result of her wish, getting carried away with excitement - she's a hero of justice! she'll oppose anyone who fights selfishly - only to come crashing down to Earth when she learns that 1) as a Magical Girl, she's no longer human 2) her friend Hitomi also likes Kyousuke and intends to confess to him. Sayaka can't bring herself to confess, feeling no one could ever love a "zombie", and Kyousuke begins dating Hitomi with no idea that Sayaka is the person to whom he owes his recovery.

She does not take this well. She takes the fact that she resents this even worse. Sayaka is driven out of her mind by depression and grief, hating herself for not living up to everything she wants to be - she can't confess to Kyousuke, she can't be a good friend to Hitomi, if she gets this upset over something this personal and selfish can she really call herself a "hero of justice", etc. Sayaka had always been hard on herself, but the stress of being a Magical Girl drives her to the breaking point. She lashes out against Madoka and blames herself for that, too. Eventually she's completely consumed by her despair and becomes one of the very Witches she'd become a Magical Girl to fight, and is destroyed by Kyoko, a magical girl who sees her former self in Sayaka's idealism and considers it something precious, but can't express that until it's too late.

Being meguca is suffering.

AU Info

AU Name: Sayaka Miki
Age: 14

AU History: Like in her original canon, Sayaka is a middle-class girl with an unremarkable family life. She's holding a candle for her childhood friend Kyousuke, always finding reasons and excuses not to tell him how she feels even as she visits him in the hospital, bearing gifts. She attends Promised Morning's middle school, and I'll keep it hazy whether or not she knows Madoka/whether Madoka is a friend from her original school or Promised Morning, to give any future Meduka flexibility.

Sayaka did not awaken when attacked by a Nightmare, instead awakening last October as part of a very vivid dream in which it was Kyousuke under attack and giving up on himself and his ability to ever play violin again. Her awakening thrilled her, as she'd always admired and idolized Dreamers, and she's so incredibly psyched to be starting her second semester at Promised Morning. She actually applies herself to her studies since she's at Hero of Justice school - but that also means the pressure is on to be a proper Dreamer. She can't mess up with all these amazing people watching. But there's no way she'll mess up, right? She's a Dreamer now, hanging out with the kinds of people who she has dreamed of all her life. There's no way she'll ever regret her Awakening!

AU Personality: Like her canon self, Sayaka remains a girl of firm black-and-white scruples, who holds everyone, especially herself, to unrealistically high standards. She puts on a brave and casual face, joking and acting carefree, but is surprisingly quick to put herself down. If you mess with her friends, or with the weak, she goes on the offensive - but she can't work up the courage to confess to Kyousuke, doing good deeds for him instead of having a real honest human conversation. She doesn't see shades of gray at all, not in people or in situations. Things are either Good or Bad.

Sayaka's inflexibility and extremist morals are arguably a product of her equally extreme mood swings and outlook. Whether Sayaka's riding a euphoric high, fretting in self-berating fear, or beating herself up for her own "weakness", she gets carried away by her emotions. She probably also has a little bit of undiagnosed depression, given how hard it is for her to crawl out of a mental hole once she's dug it. Basically, Sayaka doesn't know how to regulate her feelings, and that causes problems for herself and others. She spirals in self-doubt, which can lead to indecision - but she also gets carried away in the moment, which can lead to recklessness. The only kind of self-awareness she has is the ability to pick herself apart, refusing to accept herself or the world as it is. It's not a mindset that lends itself to fulfillment or happiness.

The circumstances of her becoming a Magical Girl predispose her to have a potentially happier ending here for two reasons, though. One, she didn't have a wish granted, so she's got no enhanced reason to beat herself up for being upset Kyousuke doesn't return her feelings (...which she can't even confess to him). Two, the whole world knows about Dreamers, and has for as long as Sayaka has been alive. So instead of being new to the concept....

Sayaka Miki is a magical girl otaku.

She's admired Dreamers since she was a kid. She's probably played at being a Dreamer on the playground, and stuck up for bullied kids because it seemed Dreamer-like. She obsessively tracks Dreamer news and admires veteran Dreamers with a fangirl fervor, especially those who seem to live up to her Hero-of-Justice ideals. It will be soul-crushing to find out Dreamers too are normal humans, but for right now, she's still very much in the honeymoon phase. She doesn't have a mentor yet but that's partly because she can't pick who to ask, and isn't even sure if she wants to ask......she'd like someone to ask HER, for someone to need HER, to pick HER, but she's not super willing to admit that to herself.

Sayaka definitely needs to be needed, though. Her looking after others, protecting them and watching out for them, even to a degree the favors she does for Kyousuke, do stem partly from the kind of person she wants to be but also from a desire for acknowledgment and praise. Because she doesn't have a very high opinion of herself and sincerely wants to be of use, she clings to any role that lets her feel important, like she's doing a Big Good Thing. If the wrong mentor gets their hooks into her this could make for a roller coaster arc, but if someone she admires also tries to teach her some actual (gasp) COPING MECHANISMS, there'll be hope for her yet.

It's about time this damn girl had some hope that didn't involve dying.

Other AU Changes: I'm keeping the detail from MagiReco that her uncle owns a seaside property for the inevitable summer beach episode. Also, the MagiReco notes indicate that Sayaka ages up to 16 during her transformation, and that's cool. So her Dreamer form does look a few years older than her current age - she "dreams of" being a cool senpai, after all!

Dreamer Info

Dreamer Title: Dreamer Fortissimo
Appearance:

Archetype: Novice

Power Considerations:

Spark Edge - Dreamer Fortissimo summons multiple cutlasses. These can be stuck in the ground or floating in midair, and she can manipulate them at whim in addition to attacking with them as swords.

Rhapsody - Dreamer Fortissimo enters a berserk state and goes on a rampage. In this state, she doesn't feel pain and auto-regenerates, but she also loses all ability for rational thought.

Da Capo El Fine - Dreamer Fortissimo heals herself of physical damage.

Melodia Appassionata - Dreamer Fortissimo summons a large sword to ride like a surfboard, as well as a large amount of water that she can manipulate. She can use this water to attack or she can flood the space and drive the surfsword into the opponent. I LOVE ANIME.

Her finisher, when she is an experienced enough Dreamer to have one, is Prestissimo Agitato Dream, in which she both rapid-fire attacks the enemy or enemies with her cutlass AND pummels them with water/bubbles, with some musical score special effects for Flavor. Behold, I have a YT clip.
